What is Holy Week?
The triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem is celebrated with palm fronds distributed to the congregation by our children. The Bible reveals that when Jesus entered Jerusalem, the crowds greeted him by waving palm branches and covering his path with palm branches. Immediately following this great time of celebration in the ministry of Jesus, he begins his journey to the cross.
Maundy (Holy) Thursday
Also known as Holy Thursday, on this day we commemorate the final meal that Jesus had with his disciples before his crucifixion. We also recall his act of washing the disciples feet; an example he calls all disciples to follow.
On this day we commemorate the passion, or suffering, and death on the cross of the Lord, Jesus Christ. This day is spent in fasting, prayer, repentance, and meditation on the agony and suffering of Christ on the cross.
Jesus was raised from the dead three days after his death on the cross. Through his death, burial, and resurrection, Jesus paid the penalty for sin, thus granting for all who believe in him, eternal life in Christ Jesus.
